Hackney Giving has made grants of £15,000 to five front-line organisations helping Hackney residents access the food and supplies they need during the coronavirus crisis.

The five grants of £3,000 have been made to African Community School, Cambridge Heath Salvation Army, Community African Network, Day-Mer Turkish and Kurdish Community Centre and The Schonfeld Foundation. All groups are helping people to get hold of the food and other essentials they need during the crisis.

Oladapo Awosokanre from Community African Network said, “We’re really happy to be a beneficiary of a Hackney Giving grant. CAN represents the African community in Hackney and the grant will go a long way in helping people during the crisis, especially families that have very little income, people with no recourse to public funds as well as elderly people that can’t go out during the lockdown.”

Hackney Giving is a single point of giving for individuals and businesses that want to support Hackney’s voluntary and community groups. We recognised the changing needs of Hackney communities during the crisis and launched a Coronavirus Response fundraising appeal, starting with a gift of nearly £4,000 from Burberry.

Since then, many Hackney residents have generously donated online, adding comments such as “A wonderful way to support all the volunteer organisations helping our community in these uncertain and troubled times” and “So good to know Hackney is pulling together”.

The Hackney Giving website, www.hackneygiving.org.uk, has details of how to donate and will carry announcements about further rounds of funding to frontline community groups. Please also follow @hackneygiving on Twitter for the latest updates.
