The 2021 Supported Internship programme is already bearing fruit with leavers securing paid employment at Hackney Council, Homerton Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital.

Project SEARCH is the Council’s one-year work-based Supported Internship programme for young people between 16-24 with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Interns complete three rotations in departments across Hackney Council and Homerton Hospital supported by a Job Coach and Tutor, with a dozen students from this year’s cohort celebrating graduation in June.

During the placements students gain workplace skills as well as an employability BTEC qualification (Work Skills Entry Level 3). The qualification is taught by a Tutor from Bsix.

Each intern works with a Job Coach and Supported Employment Advisor who provide support to make sure they find paid work.

Sam Tarrant, who graduated from this year’s programme, said: “The Supported Internship programme was a supportive and kind environment that has really helped me to learn and better myself.

“I’ve now secured a Kickstart role within Hackney Council’s Customer Relationship Team, as a Business Support Officer and I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities it will present.”

Fellow graduate Jamie Ohonyon said: “When I started on the Supported Internship programme I wasn’t sure on the type of job I wanted to do.

“With the help of the Tutors and Job Coaches, I have a better understanding of my career goals. I am proud to say I have recently accepted a Receptionist role in Homerton Hospital.”

Interns who are yet to bag paid work will continue to be supported by the Council’s Supported Employment Team to help them secure a job that matches their goals.
